A magic illusion. Seeing is believing.

We want to transform the room into Emporium of optical illusions for the children to explore. Can you help us do this? Do you have any at home or have you time to create one? The Boxes Are Open!!

What an amazing afternoon.

Two days of anticipation. 13 Boxes across 13 classes. All with mystery objects inside!

Now begins the challenge to plan the most creative learning experiences possible from each object.

We hope all the children enjoy their half term, and come back ready for some great learning experiences on their return on Wednesday 5th June.

3/4 Open Day

As you all know today was open house for all parents to see their offspring in all their learning glory! It was really great to see the children excited to show their parents all their hard work and receive the praise they deserved.
Some lucky parents in 3/4 got to get a sneak peak of the practises for the show in the Great Hall in July. Photos of the day below!

EYFS - We're off to the Ugly Bug Ball!

We started our week by watching a film clip of Disney’s ‘Ugly Bug Ball’. We loved the little cartoon and funny song. It inspired us to get creative and dress up as Ugly Bugs off to the ball. We used our dressing up clothes, props and fabrics to create mini-beast costumes. All dressed up we then enjoyed dancing to classical music, just like a real ball. We also took it in turns to be the ball’s Official Photographer, taking photos of our friends in all their bug inspired finery. Some children extended their learning by using these photos in a writing task. Such fun!!!

EYFS - We're going on a bug hunt.

We’re going on a bug hunt,

We’re going to catch a small one,

What a chilly day,

We’re not scared!

Oh wow a worm,

A wiggly squiggly worm!

Today we went on a mini beast hunt. Using magnifying glasses to investigate our outside area we discovered a worm, a spider, a caterpillar, an ant, a slug, a daddy long legs AND a bee. Using our writing skills we recorded every bug we spotted and stuck the list up on our mini beast display.

Next we built an area to attract more mini beasts. We filled pots with wood chips, made log and rock piles, and turned containers upside down to give bugs places to live and hide. We even used our old fruit snack scraps as food to attract mini beasts. We have closed the area off the area for a few days to give the mini beasts a chance to move in. We can’t wait to investigate on Monday.

Year 3/4 - Maths

Today we looked at logical thinking. The problem the children faced was as follows:

You have 2 1p coins, 2 2p coins and 2 5p coins. All the coins are in a row but you don’t know their order.

The 1p’s have 1 coin separating them. The 2p’s have 2 coins separating them and the 5p’s have 3 coins separating them. What order are they in?

The exercise was to encourage experimentation, communication and logical thought. IT was truly fascinating to experience the children discussing and deliberating the problem, explaining to each other and trying out different solutions.

EYFS - Reception's trip to Cricklepit Mill

This morning Red and Blue Groups walked (very sensibly) to Devon Wildlife Trust’s Cricklepit Mill and met Paul Martin. Paul showed us around the mill’s garden and told us all about the local wildlife. We had a great time exploring and discovering what attracts the huge variety of wildlife to the garden. We spotted birds, bees, butterflies and bluebells amongst many other things. We were fascinated by the leat and were lucky enough to see the mill’s water wheel in action.

The children returned to school eager to look for mini-beasts in our own school wildlife garden. We will be using the experience as inspiration for this week’s writing activity. The children will be writing a whole class ‘We’re Going on a Bug Hunt’. You will be able to see it on display on our Open Learning Day Thursday 23rd May. We will also be performing our Mini Beast Maths song.

EYFS _ Windy Day Play.

The weather today was extremely windy . So we packed away our equipment (that was being blown about quite a bit!) and got our ribbons and scarves out to play with. There was lots of running, skipping, twirling and whirling. Plus LOTS of fun and laughter.

EYFS - We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Our focus book this week is Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury’s ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. A well known story that many of the children brought home in their Book Trust bags at the start of the school year.

To get to know the story we role played it in our outdoor area. We went through the long wavy grass, a deep cold river, thick oozy mud, a big dark forest, a swirling whirling snowstorm and a narrow gloomy cave. When we found the bear in the cave, we got a fright and ran away.
