Our Community Garden Plot Gets Underway!

We are delighted that work on our community garden plot in St Thomas Pleasure Grounds started today.

We are working  in partnership with the BloomIn St Thomas and Food Glorious Food projects to start a shared community garden plot. The idea is that Montgomery children and local community members grow fruit and vegetables in the plot, sharing the responsibility for looking after the garden. The idea  comes from the Incredible Edible Network, where community spaces are reclaimed for shared planting and growing. Find out more here.

So, to start the project we needed to get the earth ready for planting. Lots of digging and raking was in order.

A BIG thank you to our parents and guardians who came to help roll turf and dig over the earth.  It was great to see you and we REALLY appreciate you giving up your time to help.

Alongside our brilliant parents, we were helped by John Taylor (BloomIn St Thomas – Britain in Bloom co-ordinator), Nicole Redfern (Devon Development Education Co-ordinator), Rob Vickery (ex staff member) and Tom Statton (school caretaker).

Lots of local residents stopped to ask us what we were up to and approved of the use of our plans. They are looking forward to seeing the outcomes.

We hope that the whole community will support us in looking after the plot. The children in Year 3/4 have already been out to help dig the ground over and are very excited about our planting plans. We are just waiting for Exeter City Council to fence the area off before we get going with planting.

We would like to invite our families to use this plot too. If you would like to grow something in the plot you are very welcome. We can lend you the tools and have tyres that can be used as planters. Please get in touch through the school office if you would like to do this.

We would also appreciate any additional seedlings/plants you may have spare from your own garden/allotment please to plant in the plot.

We hope you will be inspired to garden with us and get growing.
