EYFS Learning Phonics

Learning Phonics.

Thank you for the home learning support the children have received so far. There is lots of evidence of hard work in their books.

The children in Red and Blue Groups (Reception children) have learnt the phonemes (letter sounds) s a t and p so far.

Below you will find the pictures, actions and songs we have taught the children to help them remember each phoneme (letter sound) and its corresponding grapheme (letter shape). We use the Jolly Phonics songs and pictures.

We appreciate that this may be all very new to parents and carers, and very different to how you might have learnt letter sounds yourself.  To help, we  are planning a phonics workshop  to explain how we teach phonics and how you can help at home. A letter will be sent out soon with dates and times.

In the meantime please speak to Ms Vickery, Mrs Ridout or Mrs Williams if you have any questions.

Please see previous post for s.

Hopefully ,the children will be able to sing the songs to you. You can also find the songs on YouTube if you search for ‘Jolly Phonic’s songs’.

This week we will learn how to blend these four letter sounds together to make simple words like at and as.

Foundation Stage Phonics and Numeracy

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

We are sorry we were not able to have our parents in for the workshops today due to staff illness. But the children have been making good progress learning in their groups. Mrs Simm’s group have been learning about digraphs (two letters which make one sound) such as ai, ee, oa and oo. Ms Tong’s group have been learning to write and make the sounds for r, n,m, h, p and b. You could look for things in the house that begin with these letters and practice writing them at home.

In our number work we have been learning to use counting to find the answer to simple problems about how many are in a group or what happens if you add or take away objects from a set. We have used toys, numicon shapes and number lines to help us with this learning.

We have also been exploring ice in the water trays to see what happens to it, how it changes and what it feels like. At home you could make some ice cubes or put a cup of water in the freezer and see what it is like. How could you stop it melting? Where is a cold place in your house? Draw about it and bring it to school if you like!
